Mercedes-Benz Truck Diagnostics

XENTRY VCI for Mercedes trucks: Actros, Arocs, and Atego guide

The Mercedes-Benz truck diagnostic system is not simply adding model names next to passenger car software. Actros, Arocs, Atego, Econic, Unimog, and eActros have different tasks, electrical architectures, and control unit layouts. In the current Daimler Truck process, the VCI firmware identity, truck software, and user authorization are verified separately; it is officially stated that a VCI switched to truck firmware cannot be reverted to passenger/van diagnostics. This guide explains the necessary distinctions before evaluating the device in a truck workshop.

Select the VCI hardware with the correct identity

Mercedes-Benz XENTRY Diagnosis VCI

Examine with original Bosch hardware, serial label, and connection scope. Truck usage must be verified separately with firmware identity and Daimler Truck software authorization before ordering.

Passenger/van XENTRY VCI and a Daimler Truck VCI dedicated to trucks cannot be used under the same identity simultaneously. Obtain written confirmation of compatibility before deciding on conversion and usage.

Quick comparison

Diagnostic plan by Mercedes truck family

The vehicle family determines the service scenario; exact coverage is verified in the VIN, control unit, and Daimler Truck software.

Vehicle familyTypical UsePrimary check
Actros / Actros LLong-haul and heavy distributionEngine, transmission, brakes, retarder, emissions, and cabin systems
ArocsConstruction, site, and heavy loadAxle configuration, PTO/superstructure, off-road systems, and vehicle variant
AtegoUrban and regional distributionTonality, engine, brake system, and superstructure control units
Econic / eEconicMunicipal and special applicationsSuperstructure integration, safety systems, and electric drivetrain
eActrosElectric distribution and long-haulHigh voltage authorization, battery/charging system, and safe operating procedures

Decision guide

Why is the truck VCI planned separately from passenger car use?

Daimler Truck follows a separate software, user role, and hardware process for truck diagnostics. The official 2024 announcement states that the XENTRY VCI loaded with Daimler Truck Diagnostics firmware is designated as a truck VCI, and subsequently, passenger and van diagnostics cannot be performed, with no option to revert to older firmware. Therefore, a simultaneous 'passenger car + truck' promise for the same device is not made.

Before ordering, check the device's current firmware identity, the software to be used, and the organization's Daimler Truck access.

If conversion is irreversible, it is an operational decision which workshop line the device will be assigned to. If passenger and truck services are run concurrently, a separate VCI plan may be necessary.

Which systems are inquired for Actros and Actros L?

Actros and Actros L are used for long-haul and heavy distribution tasks. Diagnostic needs are not limited to engine and basic fault codes; automated transmissions, retarders, braking systems, driving assistance, cabin electronics, and emission systems may be included in the same work order. VCI selection is verified through the intended operations and vehicle generation.

  • Engine, transmission, and retarder control units
  • ABS/EBS and driving assistance systems
  • DPF, SCR, AdBlue, and NOx diagnostics
  • Cabin, instrument cluster, and fleet equipment

Additional verifications for Arocs construction site vehicles

Arocs can be configured for various tasks such as dump trucks, concrete mixers, tractors, and heavy haulage. Axle count, drive configuration, auxiliary hydraulic drive, PTO, and superstructure control can vary within the same model family. The scope of fault detection is determined not just by the Arocs name but by the VIN, superstructure, and target control unit.

In construction site conditions, cables and sockets are checked for moisture, dust, impact, and voltage drops. When communication errors are observed, a direct control unit replacement is not immediately performed.

Even if the superstructure manufacturer's control unit is connected to the Mercedes-Benz vehicle network, it may require separate technical documentation or service tools.

Usage differences for Atego, Econic, and Unimog

Atego is used for distribution and public service applications, Econic for municipal and special tasks, and Unimog as an equipment carrier or for off-road duties. Different superstructures may add manufacturer-specific control layers such as garbage compaction, cranes, fire fighting, road maintenance, or hydraulic equipment. Main vehicle diagnostics and superstructure diagnostics are not considered the same scope.

  • Record vehicle chassis and superstructure manufacturer separately
  • Check engine, brake, and transmission scope on a system-by-system basis
  • Create a safe working area for PTO and hydraulic operations
  • Verify cable part number and pin configuration

Decision guide

High voltage limit for eActros and eEconic

eActros and eEconic belong to the electric heavy-duty vehicle family. The diagnostic software showing battery, charging, or thermal management data does not grant physical work authorization on high-voltage systems. De-energizing, measurements, and component intervention require trained personnel, appropriate protective equipment, and manufacturer procedures.

Workshops distinguish between high-voltage safety and 24 V auxiliary electrical diagnostics. Although fault symptoms in both areas may appear in the same report, test equipment and safety steps differ.

Charging infrastructure or external equipment faults should not be interpreted as vehicle control unit errors. The vehicle, charging unit, and wiring are tested in separate layers.

Decision guide

How to check 24 V, cable, and power support?

In a truck workshop, 24 V vehicle electrical systems, long cable routes, and different diagnostic sockets are distinct from passenger car workflows. The VCI's voltage range, the correct OBD/J1939 or manufacturer cable, and the condition of the vehicle batteries are verified before the operation. Uninterrupted power support compliant with manufacturer specifications is required during programming.

  • Measure battery pairs and chassis connection
  • Match cable by name and part number
  • Prepare power support before programming
  • Do not use unverified extension cables for critical operations

Decision guide

Truck workshop checklist before purchase

The last Mercedes-Benz trucks accepted by the workshop are listed, including model, year, VIN, engine, transmission, brake system, emission level, and superstructure. Required operations are categorized as code reading, live data, active test, calibration, and Flash. Then, the device firmware, Daimler Truck software, user role, and cable set are matched in writing for each vehicle.

  • Device's current VCI firmware identity
  • Daimler Truck Diagnostics software and user authorization
  • Vehicle generation, VIN, and target control unit
  • 24 V and required cable/adapter configuration
  • Separate hardware requirement from passenger/van line

Frequently Asked Questions

Most frequently asked questions by customers

Can the same XENTRY VCI be used simultaneously on Mercedes passenger cars and trucks?

According to the current Daimler Truck announcement, a VCI switched to truck firmware can no longer be used for passenger/van diagnostics, and there is no going back. Therefore, both uses should be evaluated with separate device identities and software plans.

Is the XENTRY VCI sufficient for Actros and Arocs?

The VCI is only communication hardware. Appropriate Daimler Truck firmware, software, StartKey/license, user authorization, the correct cable, and vehicle coverage are also required.

Do Atego and Unimog use the same cable?

The exact connection must be verified based on the vehicle generation and socket. Physically similar cables may not have the same pin configuration or support the same communication protocols.

Is the truck installation service included in the device price?

No. Hardware, software/license, and installation are separate items. Furthermore, truck software and access eligibility must be verified before ordering.
