Battery Tester User Guide

How to use the Ancel BST600 battery tester?

The ANCEL BST600 is an independent device that examines battery condition, starting behavior, and charging system through three separate test flows for 12V and 24V lead-acid starter batteries. Before starting the test, the battery chemistry, label standard, and nominal value must be selected correctly. Clip contact, whether the battery has been recently charged, and the vehicle's operating status affect the result. This guide translates the manufacturer's BST600 user manual's procedure into service practice; it does not replace the vehicle manufacturer's model-specific service procedure.

Evaluation Method

How was this guide prepared?

This guide was prepared by examining the actual BST600 product images provided to Otobiltek and ANCEL's official product page and user manual. No claim of field-tested experience is used.

Voltage range, supported battery types, test standards, menu steps, measurement method, safety notes, and printing function have been verified from the manufacturer's BST600 manual.

  1. Claim exists in the official source for the BST600 model
  2. Separation of battery, starting, and charging tests
  3. Distinguishing between the conductance method and classic high current load testing
  4. Images show the same product or the described connection step
  5. No definitive fault or remaining life result from a single measurement

If the manufacturer's manual, product hardware, or sales package changes, technical values and images will be re-compared; unverified features will not be added.

Decision guide

1. Determine the device coverage correctly before testing

The BST600 is a battery and electrical system tester for lead-acid starter batteries. The manufacturer's manual specifies 12V and 24V systems, a DC 9-35V operating range, and Regular Flooded, AGM Flat Plate, AGM Spiral, GEL, and EFB battery options. Lithium battery support is not mentioned in official sources. The device does not read fault codes from the engine, ABS, or airbag control units; it also does not perform BMS battery registration or coding.

At vehicle acceptance, the complaint is first recorded: different complaints such as slow starting, battery light, frequent discharge, or post-new battery check are not reduced to the same test. The physical condition of the battery is inspected for cracks, leaks, loose terminals, and oxidation. Safety procedures are applied without connecting the device to a damaged battery or cable.

If the battery has been recently charged, the surface charge voltage may appear higher than normal. The manual recommends turning the headlights on and off for two to three minutes after a full charge to bring the voltage closer to normal, then performing the test. This step does not mean applying random load to every vehicle; vehicle manufacturer warnings take precedence.

  • 12V/24V lead-acid starter battery
  • DC 9-35V operating range
  • No ECU fault code or BMS coding function
  • Testing is not initiated on a damaged battery or cable

2. Connect the clips with clean and firm contact

Connect the red clip to the positive terminal and the black clip to the negative terminal. The manufacturer specifies connecting the red clip first. Attaching the clips to a painted, dirty, or loose surface can corrupt the measurement. If the screen does not turn on or a connection warning appears, first check the terminal polarity and metal contact surface; do not maintain a risky connection by manually moving the clips to get a result.

With the engine running, keep the test device and cables away from belts, fans, pulleys, exhaust, and other hot or moving parts. Check the insulation of the clips, cable body, and device casing before testing. The manufacturer's mention of reverse polarity protection does not make incorrect connection a normal usage method.

The connection visual in this section illustrates terminal contact; it does not solely prove automatic overload shutdown or any other protection feature. Safety features are evaluated with the product label and official manual.

Decision guide

3. Enter the battery type, test standard, and nominal value from the label

In the battery test menu, the battery type is selected first. Then, the CCA, BCI, CA, MCA, JIS, SAE, DIN, IEC, EN, or GB standard written on the label is used. The same number does not have the same equivalent in different standards; operating the device in CCA setting when the label says EN does not create a correct comparison. For JIS batteries, the JIS code on the label is used.

The manual lists the upper limit as 2000 for CCA, BCI, CA, MCA, SAE, and EN; and 1400 for DIN, IEC, and GB. The 100-2000 CCA range stated on the product page describes the general CCA range; each standard's own range should be considered separately.

If the label is unreadable, the value is not estimated. Technical information from the vehicle or battery manufacturer is found. The battery technology is verified using the label and part record rather than just the cover appearance. Incorrect input leads the device to compare the measured value with the wrong reference.

  • Select battery chemistry from the label
  • Do not confuse standards like CCA with EN
  • Do not estimate the nominal value
  • Use the label code for JIS batteries

4. Complete the battery test with the engine off

After entering the correct settings, the battery test is initiated. The BST600 displays results such as measured value, voltage, internal resistance, charge status, and health assessment on the screen. If the result indicates "good," "charge and retest," or a need for replacement, it is recorded along with the measurement conditions and connection quality. Instead of immediately declaring a low-charged battery as faulty, charging and retesting according to the manufacturer's flow is required.

The BST600 calculates internal resistance using the small-signal conductance method described in the manual. It does not draw the short-term 40-80 A high current used in classic load testing. These two methods should not be presented under the same name. Conductance testing provides a quick scan and record; it is supported by different measurements and manufacturer procedures when necessary.

The manual explains that a single internal resistance or conductance measurement cannot provide the definitive remaining life of the battery. A sudden increase in internal resistance and a decrease in conductance can be significant indicators; however, age, temperature, usage history, starting behavior, and the charging system are examined separately.

Decision guide

5. Start the engine at the device's requested moment during the starting test

After selecting the starting test, follow the device's on-screen instructions and start the engine. The BST600 records the cranking duration and voltage behavior at the moment of cranking. If the battery test appears good but there is a significant voltage drop during cranking, check the terminals, ground connection, starter motor, and the battery's charge level separately. A single low value is not a direct part replacement decision.

Re-check that the cables are not approaching moving parts in the engine compartment during the test. After the engine starts, wait for the device to complete the result. Do not unnecessarily drain the battery by turning the ignition on and off multiple times. If the vehicle starts with difficulty, follow the service safety procedure and manufacturer's test method.

The battery test and the starting test answer different questions. The former shows the battery's current electrical state, and the latter shows the system's behavior when starting the engine. Keeping both results side-by-side in the same service record makes the decision more understandable.

6. Perform the charging system test with charged and uncharged steps

With the engine running, turn on the charging test. According to the device's instructions, take measurements first with electrical consumers off, then with loads like headlights and fans on. The BST600 displays the unloaded voltage, loaded voltage, and ripple result. The result is compared with the vehicle manufacturer's target values; a single fixed voltage expectation is not correct for every vehicle in modern smart charging systems.

A low or high charging result does not prove the alternator is faulty on its own. Belts, cables, ground connections, fuses, battery sensors, and vehicle energy management are evaluated. The charging system test does not replace the battery test, nor does the battery test replace the alternator check.

In 24V commercial vehicles, differences in age and capacity between series-connected batteries can affect the total system result. System connections and terminal polarity are physically checked. If the vehicle manufacturer requires a separate battery test, each battery is measured individually using the appropriate procedure.

Decision guide

7. Print the result and save it with the measurement conditions

After the battery, starting, or charging test is completed, the result can be obtained from the built-in thermal printer. The manufacturer specifies using standard 57mm wide thermal paper and checking if the roller presses correctly against the paper if there is a printing issue. The VIN number's last four digits can be entered in the printing flow; the full VIN or personal data is not unnecessarily included in the output.

If the date, battery type, label standard, nominal value, and whether the test was performed on the vehicle or on a bench are added to the output, the subsequent comparison will be more explanatory. Records taken with the same settings before and after a new battery clarify the work performed for the customer.

Thermal output can fade over time. If the service needs to keep long-term records, a photo of the output or a work order record can be saved. The result on the paper is not considered a correct diagnostic document if the clip contact and entered values are incorrect; measurement conditions are part of the report.

8. Maintain the device's limitations when interpreting the result

The BST600 result provides quick decision support; it is not a report of definitive remaining life, the entire vehicle electrical system, or ECU faults. A "battery good" result does not indicate the absence of parasitic draw. A "charging system normal" result does not prove that all energy management control units are fault-free. The measurement is evaluated in the same file as the customer complaint and the vehicle manufacturer's procedure.

The most reliable approach in the field is repeatable measurement: clean connection, correct battery type, correct standard, recorded temperature, and the same test conditions. If the result is unexpected, recheck the settings and contact; do not randomly change menus or nominal values to get different results.

In vehicles requiring BMS battery registration, the BST600 can perform physical battery and charging checks but does not register the new battery with the vehicle's control unit. Battery registration, reset, or coding requires a diagnostic device with verified vehicle coverage and model-specific procedures.
